Previous Herald Square, New York, USA

This is one of few spaces included in this collection of Urban squares that strictly speaking is not a square. I think that characteristics of the space and it significant role of improving public gathering spots in an urban environment explains its inclusion.

Sculpture garden is part of the latest MOMA redesign by architect Yoshio Tanaguchi, finished in 2004. It is actually keeping P. Johnson original design from 1953 intact but it is enlarged and closely integrated with surrounding old and new buildings.   Numerous celebrated sculptures from the collection Picasso – [photo bellow right], Calder, Lachaise, Gacometti, Moore, Rodin, Maillol, Smith, Miro, Oldenburg... Sound of water, and breeze in the trees are really making this space remarkable quiet oases in downtown Manhattan.
