Plaça de Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain, 2009

This is a point of first impression of Barcelona, hub for several airport transportation, metro lines, multiple bus lines. under this square is a major tourist information centre. Top photo right, sculpture by F. Mares represent Barcelona in whole its glory.

We were trying to avoid huge crowd on this square, specially during the noon hours, but every time you need to go anywhere out of the city centre you will have to come here or at least pass true the plaça.

Familiarity with this place and surrounding large stores and shopping malls comes very helpful for good shopping deals.

Tip for visitors: We purchased here "art ticket" for 6 major city museums [22 euros] that will not only save 70% of the entrance fee but also save you hours of waiting in lines to see those. Monthly transportation pass [46 euros] is available in the metro ticket boot, valid for all city metro and bus lines and some out of city trains including one for the airport.

Cheapest in Barca "rent-a-car" company "Pepe" is also located on the square having extra special prices when you rent in person. Corte Ingles [retail store located also on the square] is a rare store that will fulfill promise of the Spanish government to return the tax paid for non EU citizens.

Version of this square from the previous visit in 2004 is here.
