The Victor Plato, Beograd, Srbija, 2023[open in full screen]

  Previous

We are recording this plato in the Upper Town of the Belgrade Fortress Kelemegdan with the intention to show how significant monument here is for the city and the country. The Victor [Pobednink] is a monument built to commemorate Serbia's victory over the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires during the Balkan Wars and the First World War. Cast in 1913, erected in 1928, is one of the most famous works of Ivan Meštrović. Standing bronze male figure in the nude is with a falcon in the left hand and a sword in the right, as a symbols of peace and war.

Belgrade Fortress is located on top of the 125.5 metres high ridge. The cliff-like ridge overlooks the Great War Island [Veliko ratno ostrvo] and the confluence of the Sava river into the Danube, and makes one of the most beautiful natural lookouts in Belgrade.

Other important structure is Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments. It was built at the end of the nineteenth century as a War Museum in a traditional Serbian style.

At every visit to the Belgrade we are not missing an opportunity to enjoy atmosphere here sharing it with numerous tourists, and admire the view over the confluence and view of New Belgrade and the city of Zemun on the other side.

Interactive map of the complete Kalemegdan Fortress is available here.
