In 1807, during the Austrian occupation, Aleksander platz was the first known name for the section of the modern day Republic Square [Trg Republike].

The earliest recorded mention of the area is quite dreary, as an execution spot for local rebels.

Check other view of this square [from 2007] and extension of this pedestrianized part of the town. I am particularly fond of this place, I lived 100m away for the most of my youth years.

Our favourite cafe, "By The Horse" is still here, under new name thou, but sweets are still sweet.

We announced few years back that reconstructed square is scheduled to be open in September 2019. It is open now.

Results are disappointing. This most significant urban square in the city, hosting National Museum, National Theater, monument to Knez Mihajlo, famous Serbian king, and several other monumental buildings lost its social charm. Huge empty space in the middle without any content suppose to be for gatherings, concerts etc. But what when they are not organized as this lazy Sunday?
