Zemun was separate town absorbed into Belgrade in 1934. From the 9th century it is mentioned with slavic name Zemln, meaning earth.

Strategic location on the hill overlooking mouth of river Sava to the Danube and Beograd on the opposite side of the rivers, was always reason for dispute between Austro-Hungary, Turkey and Serbia.

  It was changing hands many times and population was shifting but after first world war in 1918 city ended up being part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

Veliki trg [meaning large square] is located in the part of Zemun called lower city [donji grad] which constitutes the cultural and historical unit of great importance of old core of the city which was protected in 1979.   When finally Zemun was liberated from Turks in 1717 inhabitants converted mosque located on this square to the catholic church. in 1735 first church was built. Then in 1787, church that is standing here today, was started but it was not finished until 1817. This structure is dominating this large square. During summer months Veliki Trg si mainly used for events like “Zemun Summer Fest” going on during our visit.
