  Previous

Sremski Karlovci is town in Vojvodina, the northern province of Serbia. The town was first mentioned in historical documents in 1308 with the name Karma, fortress built on the ruins of the ancient Roman one. Slavic name Karlovci was first recorded in 1532. In 1699 it was a site of a congress that ended hostilities between Ottoman [Turkish] empire and coalition of various European powers.

Since that time it was a part of Austro-Hungarian monarchy with dominantly Serbian population. It was a spiritual and cultural centre of the Serbs in this part of the country. This area joined kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians in 1918 when it was founded.

Many very important structures are still standing around this square named after one of the most popular serbian poets.

Lets name some of them: Cathedral church of St. Nikola from 1762, Patriarch court - beginning of XIX century, Karlovci gymnasium founded in 1791, peace chapel from 1699 to commemorate peace treaty, roman catholic church of St. Trinity 1768, magistrate, beginning of XIX century, four lions fountain from 1799 and of course monument to the famous poet Branko Radicevic.

Visitors to this wonderful city will be also interested to know that several galleries, antiquarian and souvenir shop, book shop and two museums are located on the square as well as few excellent restaurants. Mature trees and numerous seats in the shade are completing the image.

Tip for the visitors: Sremski Karlovci and this square is fabulous starting point for the tour of 17 serbian orthodox monasteries speed all over the mountain of Fruska Gora overlooking the city. We visited just 6 of them on this occasion, check some of the images in the last row bellow.
