Largo do Corpo Santo, Funchal, Madeira, 2019[open in full screen]

Previous Praça do Industria & Comercio, Funchal

This largo consists of three distinctive spaces. Main approach from the street with enormous number of restaurants and shops, space in front and to the north of the church and quiet space further up the steps, under the large tree. It is connected to the Rua de Santa Maria, used by locals in observational role.

Original chapel was erected here at Cabo do Calhau – meaning Crystal Tip – by the end of 15th century marking the ending of the old village.

It was dedicated to the “Corpo Santo”, Saint Pedro Gonsalves, patron saint of fisherman and sailors. Some major works were done in late 16th century. It is an oldest surviving church in Funchal.

Today whole area is appreciated by visitors, and to some degree by locals, but it is overwhelmed by the numerous patios and shops totally turned toward tourist industry. It is quite unpleasant, even just to have lunch or dinner in such a crowded space.

Next Trg Republike, Beograd
