Campo Sao Francisco, Ponta Delgada, Azores, 2017[open in full screen]

This was once parade ground for the troops stationed in the Fort of Sao Braz that is standing on the south side of this square towards the sea. This fort constructed in 1552 was part of the military defence of the city along the city walls and three other forts that are demolished long time ago.

In the centre of large space still standing is huge metosideros tree planted in 1870, in a company of number of plane trees without any branches at this time of a year [March].

Large monuments at the front the main entrance to the fort is dedicated to the Azorean emigrants that left Azores in large numbers, specially after second World War, for North America.

On the north side of the campo Church of Hope [esperança] is located as a part of large complex of the first monastery for nuns that was established in here in 1535. In 1723 it housed 162 nuns. In 1821 inquisition was abolished and all religious orders were banned and that is when this monastery was closed together with all others in Portugal .

Other significant and very "graphic" is church of Sao Hose from 1714 replacing the older structure. This square is place of largest Azorean festival every fifth Sunday after Easter, with procession of the Christ of Thorns, hosed during the year inside Church of Hope.

We have two more squares from Ponta Delgada and you can also visit gallery on our photo blog.
