Largo do Cruzeiro, Ericeira, Portugal, 2010 [open in full screen]

  Previous

First house in Ericeira was built around this largo around 1229. For the village of this size [estimated 10000] it is quite remarkable to be traced back that far in the history. Village is still mostly intact, preserving historic appearance with white washed houses and predominantly blue details.

In the whole village within historic boundaries there is a restriction in place preventing any new structures to be different than the ones they are replacing.

Siting on this square visitors and locals are enjoying authentic atmosphere, smartly used mostly by tourist industry.

It is not converted to dead "museum" place, fishing port is under mayor reconstruction with investment from European Union, and it is keeping village alive and prosperous all year round. Just check few other squares in Ericeira, some from 2010 and some taken back in 2002.
