Piazza Cavour [Piazza del Kuerc], Bormio, Italy, 2011[open in full screen]

Previous Piazza Della Basilica, Tirano, Italy

Popular ski resort in the province of Sondrio, Bormio is located in the Stelvio national park. Already praised by Pliny the Elder for the preparatory properties of its thermal waters in the middle ages, it was the seat of a Contado, independent from the rest of the Valtellina province.

The town is centred around this historic piazza, a historic main trading point on the route from Venezia to Switzerland.

In the centre of the square stands the Kuerc, the medieval building where justice was once administered and public meetings held.

Now it's a focus for cultural events and performances behind which rise the high civil, Torre Delle Ore, or clock-tower, which dominates this square. Most prominent place on the square takes Chiesa Collegiata di San Gervasio e Protasio founded in 9th century. It was completely rebuilt in the XVII century after it was burned down in 1621, when Spanish soldiers ravaged the town.

This square is one of the most pleasant one I visited reminding me to the splendour of the Siena main square.

TIP for visitors: Do not miss famous "the Bagni Vecchi" [old bath] located high above the city, unforgettable experience in the bath used by romans as far back as first century and true medieval times. Photo of the spectacular view of the valley of Bormio is bellow right.

Just ~40km to the north of this square is not so famous, but really spectacular, Passo di Gavia high in the Alps. I am making exception this time and presenting you a special treat, panorama made at 2.621m above sea level. Enjoy!

Next Campo San Martin, Venezia, Italy
