Plaza, Guardalavaca, Cuba, 2012 - Psychogeograhical Portrait

Guardalavaca [meaning watch the cow] was the town on the North shore of eastern Cuba until some 10 years ago. When Cuba open up to tourist industry fantastic beach was dedicated to few large resorts and the town was moved [hidden?] few hundreds meters up the hill. This is where this plaza is located. It is very interesting place. Attempt was made to make it as social as possible. Small shopping mall with pharmacy, beauty salon, shoe repair and unavoidable ration store are all located here. Few other stores and old fashioned soviet style apartment buildings are completing the picture. Social aspect of this plaza is fulfilled with children playground, few seats under the trees and occasional truck bringing agricultural products for the locals. Great effort is made to make this public space maintained in good shape and exceptionally clean.

I think that this is perfect people watching space where locals are engaged in gathering and communication and visitors can easily observe way of life in the small city of today Cuba.

Very noticable, and very important is to pay attention how private initiatives and small shops, like music CDs one or juice stand, are poping up and of course they are on this only public space in the town.

Please don't miss small photos bellow and right, they will describe atmosphere around this plaza much better then words.
