Don Mills Plaza, Toronto, 2019[open in full screen VR version of this square]

  Previous Brookfield Place, Toronto

First Canadian planned community was started to grow around this space in 1954. Don Mills Centre was centrally located within walking distance of many rental units built around the core. It quickly became a regional centre.

Following the modern principles of similar open air shopping centres in Europe, Lijnban in Rotterdam is one of them, it was a bright example of the Toronto urban development.

What is puzzling me in the whole story is that first plaza created and built around 1955 lasted only until 1978 when it was demolished to be replaced by quite ugly mall, favourable only by people living in the few surrounding seniors home. Then in 2006 that structure was demolished to be replaced by "modern" urban village consisting of 100 retailers and services, opened on 2009.

New open air shopping centre is surprisingly very, very similar to the centre that existed on the same spot 30 earlier, but resemblance to the Lijnban in Rotterdam, where idea for this kind of shopping originated 55 years ago is even more intriguing?

What a magic circle.

One of the most noticeable item on this square in the middle of the urban village with extraordinary and quite unusual for Toronto social life, is this sculpture of several typical residential houses in the neghbourhood [photo bellow right].

Breaking up the city skyline and highly visible from the street, this artful installation is a favourite backdrop for photos, TV and film productions. This project received an IESNA 2013 Award of Merit and IES 2013 Toronto Section Illumination award.
