  Previous

When Ganges is mentioned in any content river Ganges in India comes to mind. In this case having in mind that whole Salt Spring Island is with large population with reminiscences of hippy generation first taught will be that they named this little city [population of 3000] after destination of most of their youth trips. But that is not true.

Ganges Harbour, from which Ganges takes its name, was renamed by Captain Richards in 1859 for HMS Ganges, which was at this Pacific Station /harbour/ until 1860.

The first house on Salt Spring Island was built here in 1859 by the first group of 20 settlers that arrived on the island that summer.

Ganges is the main centre on the island, with several grocery stores, numerous restaurants and art galleries, banks and a variety of other services. The main fire hall for the island and the hospital are all located in Ganges. Ganges is the home of Salt Spring Coffee, which also sells its coffee on BC Ferries.

The Ganges Market, for which the Ganges and a whole Salt Spring Island is famous, runs every Saturday from 8:30 to 4:00, from April to October.

Over hundreds of vendors sell produce, baked goods, soaps, lotions, art, jewelry, pottery, and other crafts under the rule that you must: "Make it, bake it, or grow it". Attractions include local buskers, SPCA dog care, the nearby playground, and neighboring shops. It is located in Centennial Park, Ganges and the surrounding area.

One of the best vendors, surprisingly not selling their craft, was Sally Sunshine Fairy Garden, attended by group of very enthusiastic kids, showing us their power stones and their creation of fairy gardens.

30 selected photos from Ganges are also on our page/portrait of this town.
