Victory Square, Vancouver, Canada, 2010[open in full screen]

  Previous

Victory Square is place where Vancouver war memorial, the Victory Cenotaph is located. That is where the name is coming from. It is actually park and as usual I am puzzled by the reasoning for the name. The Oddfellows Hall and what is now the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans Hall still stand uphill along Hamilton Street where the Inns of Court [old courthouse] used to be.

The Province, Sun and Dominion Buildings went up in rapid succession in the last years of the courthouse's existence, and remain today, although no longer as newspaper buildings.

The maple trees on the Pender Street side of the park are the oldest street trees in the city, planted in 1897.

Not mentioned in any city guides but well known is a store in the northern side, self proclaimed as a "Cannabis Culture Headquarters".

Not really surprising if we have in mind that the best cannabis is grown in Vancouver area [or at least that's what th e locals think].

How obsolete this sounds in 2020 when cannabis is legal all over Canada.
