St. Alban's Square, Toronto, Canada, 2008

One day I was trying to take a shortcut through this residential neigbourhood in the central Toronto. Then I've noticed this sign. where is a square, I thought? Beside being in the shape of square [more like rectangle] and having a church of St. Alban as a neighbour there is not a lot of "urban square" characteristics. Willingness to convert this regular urban park to the square is not visible anywhere.
Then why this name? Possible answer might be that it is common practice in South America to call parks plaza. Only available translation for this word to English is square?
