King Street Plaza, Toronto, Canada, 2007[open in full screen]

  Previous

This plaza is actually a court yard within Toronto Dominion Centre complex on the corner of Bay and King streets. Originally it consisted of three office towers all designed between 1967 and 1969 by famous architect Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe, assisted by J.B. Parkin and Bregman and Hamann architects.

The buildings are steel structures, painted black, with bronze-coloured glass, very typical for that period of Mies Van der Rohe architecture and lot of similar structures still exists. Check this square in New York with very similar building.

Surprisingly pleasant atmosphere on this plaza is further enhanced by the bronze sculpture consisting of a 9.1 meters ring broken in three sections and three larger that life size bronze chairs marking the brakes, created by artist Al McWiliams.

PS. This powerful sculpture was recently removed from this spot. DOES ANYBODY KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED? [Dec. 2009]

We tried to contact the author. He tried to contact TD Centre but answer was that this powerful sculpture is somewhere in the storage waiting for some better times to be retuned. As of December 2020 it is still somewhere!
