Alter Markt, Salzburg, Austria, 2011 – Psychogeographical Portrait

Alter Markt [meaning old market] is exactly that, market was laid out here in 1280. Today market is moved at the opposite side of the old city.

This square is a host of several souvenir shops, Salzburg smallest house [#10], former apotheke with beautiful rococo facade and oldest still standing patrician house.

The most important product of Salzburg is original Mozartkugel, famous sweet, produced exclusively in Salzburg and sold only in four location in the old city.

Main shop is located on this square. Stages in a production process are on the last photo bellow.

On the very prominent spot on the corner with Getreidegasse you will notice probably the most popular cafe in the city, Tomaselli. It is considered "the most Viennese" [Viena is capital of Austria] cafe in Salzburg despite of not being in Vienna. Our favourite place is terrace with BTW excellent snacks – sandwiches, on the second level overlooking not only this square but also main people flow between other large squares nearby.

Tip for the visitors: Look for the place where locals gather, this is usually the most pleasant public space always somewhat secluded from the main crowded areas. [photo bellow the map right].

On the map right squares in our collection are marked [links to individual ones are active].
