Eslanade Walk, Toronto

The difference in meaning between bigness and towering is the measure of the relationship. In fact there is an art of relationship just as there is an art of architecture. Its purpose is to take all elements that go to create the environment: buildings, trees, nature, water, advertisements and so on, and weave them together in such a way that drama is released.

For a city is a dramatic event in the environment. Look at the research that is put into making the city work: demographers, sociologists, engineers, traffic experts; all co-operating to form myriad factors into a workable, viable and healthy organization. It is tremendous human undertaking.

From the book Concise Townscape by Gordon Cullen.
