Today more than half of the world's population live in cities and this number is growing every day. As the rural population declines, the quality of life of the majority of people will depend on efficiency and sustainability of the cities around the globe. Managing urban areas has become one of the most important development challenges of the 21st century, says director of UN Desa’s Population Divisions.

This means that over the next decade it will be essential for cities to develop a certain level of self-sufficiency to feed their inhabitants adequately and save the environment.
