Psychogeography Portrait.. 58. Almost Brutalism - Toronto
  Beograd Visuals 2023

Brutalist architecture is a mid-20th-century style (1950s–1970s) characterized by raw, exposed concrete (béton brut), massive monolithic forms, and functional, geometric designs. Originating in post-WWII Europe, it was a cost-effective, "honest" approach often used for social housing, universities, and government buildings. Notable examples include Habitat 67 and the Barbican Estate.

Exhamples in this selection are "ALMOST" brutalist structures found around Toronto Metropolitan Area.

First example [ five photos above ] is R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant, art Deco Landmark, finished in 1941.

Next example is more "brutalistic". 33 Harbour Square, one of the first condominiums in Toronto [Built in 1973].

Two photos above and two bellow are from the same complex around 33 Harbour Square.

Architect Raymond Moriyama's first large project as an independent architect was the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto, with design startied in 1964 and the building being finished in 1969.

Ontario Science Centre is in danger. It is closed as being "structurally unstable", some very unpopular political move.

Robarts Library, University of Toronto, opened in 1973, precast concrete building.
In my opinion very "brutalistic" looking.

In our collection, we have two open public spaces of the Barbican Centre, one of the most notable examples of brutalist architecture. Barbican was one of the most ambitious projects of the post-war period in England, opened by the Queen in 1982.
