Psychogeography Portrait ... 16 ... Ville du Quebec, underpass
Suddenly on our right under some highway underpass we noticed... |
We started this tour quite unexpectedly, what should be a way of proper drift on this kind of discovery strolls. From our Airbnb apartment nearby one night we were on our way to the rare open air performance of the famous Cirque du Soleil in the harbour on the banks of St. Charles and St. Lawrence rivers. Suddenly on our right under some highway underpass we noticed, even in the dark, numerous huge quite attractive murals.
OK. We are coming back tomorrow for more detailed look. Here we are, it was very pleasant day in September 2013. Quite large area beneath the huge complicated knot of highways [green on our map above] turned out to be Mural/ Street Art paradise. It is obviously started as a very organized and financed activity of the city officials, but over time attracted every street artist that means something to find its own spot. Ville du Quebec [Quebec City] is birthplace of French civilization on this side of the Atlantic Ocean, capital of Canadian Province of Quebec, UNESCO world heritage treasure, only walled city of North America, city with European charm, and romantic ambience. Check our gallery to see what I am talking about. | It is started as a very organized and financed activity of the city officials |

From that point it was just visual enjoyment |
From that point it was just visual enjoyment. Some messages might be controversial or unpleasant, but freedom of expression is essence of this visually rich engaged art. Language is universal and maybe "main society" is not comprehending them clearly but if we pay more attention, it is very simple. Just little more attention.
In case of this area it is noticeable that pedestrian shortcuts are making it convenient for their way to supermarket located here, public traffic stops, and even connecting area with historic part of the city. After this first experience we used those paths to go down town too.
Whatever art we are observing today involves social media parameter, almost like new art media, maybe called "shared art". Do you agree?
Visuals all around are contributing to the impression much better than any words by me, and my imperfect English :( , images are speaking, maybe it's just for me, very clear and understandable language.
I talked on the separate place about impact of street art: "When we talk about the democracy and freedom of expression we always think about the freedom to say what's on your mind. Is everybody capable to verbalize her or his thoughts? Is there any other way to communicate? What about visual, message?". All of this applies in the same way here? Look at the photo in the middle bellow, what is not understandable there? | Is everybody capable to verbalize her or his thoughts? |

After finishing this stroll we continued looking for street art elsewhere in the city and observed several excellent examples all over the city. Just few of them are represented bellow. Ville du Quebec is extraordinary city with plenty of exciting spaces check just those two, Place-Royale and Place de l'Hotel de Ville if you are interested. And of course let us know what you think about all of this.
